About Welding Test Centre Certification
BESCA delivers a quality assurance system for the pipe welding test that conforms to the BESA code of practice TR5 (2003). Welding centres across the UK have ‘centre approval’ status to offer this welding test to experienced workers (heating and ventilation pipefitter welders) who, if successful, can apply to receive a 3-year welding certification provided by the CSCS industry-recognised card issuing and personnel registration scheme - Engineering Services SKILLcard.
The external moderation process has significantly increased the engagement with centres and individual examiners and has provided an excellent service of information, advice and guidance. The rigour of this quality assurance process also contributes to the raising of standards and a consistent approach to administering the pipe welding test throughout the UK.
Centres wishing to become accredited for centre approval status simply need to apply to BESCA using the Centre Approval Application Form.
New examiners and additional welding disciplines
Centres wishing to add new examiners to their approved centre will need to apply to BESCA using the New Examiners Application Form.
Existing examiners who wish to extend the welding disciplines they examine (for example to cover MIG and TIG) will need to apply to BESCA using the Additional Disciplines Application Form.
Guidance notes for administering the BESCA welding test in conjunction with Engineering Services SKILLcard
These guidelines have been produced in partnership by BESCA and Engineering Services SKILLcard and through consultation seminars with existing welding examiners held across the UK. Only organisations that have received 'centre approval' from BESCA will be able to receive certification for this weld test. The following document provides practical advice on how to administer the weld test and also provides clarification on the certification process.
